Looking at the sea

Being practically the only road link that runs along the sea, Route 132 completely circumscribes the Gaspé Peninsula. In order to avoid the romantic impulses and all the clichés that it arouses, the postcards taking care very well of the affair, photographing the sea is not an easy thing, Some elders confessed to me that they did not see it any more. I then believed that my quest would only be an absurd quarrel against the invisible immensity of the sea.

As I drove the miles under my car along the great coastline, I had to admit that even my own gaze is contaminated by a set of ideas that are both the subtle and insidious reflection and mask of social and cultural conditions. An ingenious know-how makes it possible to hang on the saline and windy fringe an infrastructure, not always snoring like the Legion of Honour, which forms its active connective tissue threads. I became the spectator of the end of a theatrical show where the hanging falls, with the difference that, this time, it covers everything that is blue : the sky, the sea and the snow.

The importance of the sea is still present but the indifference towards it is growing. Results a look subverting our attraction towards the sea. Hiding it is a voluntary, even socially acceptable act. Notwithstanding the above, the tables at the summer campsites will be festive because they will serve these striped bass which, in their migrations, are sacrificed to feed us.

There is no other solution. We are bathed in these embarrassing contradictions. We are so dependent on the sea.
